Despite the arrival of summer heat, Houston-area runners found plenty of ways to stay active this weekend with two unique events on the calendar: the Big Rivers Splash & Dash in New Caney and Outrun Hunger in Conroe. The week also marked the conclusion of another summer tradition, as the final Rice All Comers Track Meet of the season took place on June 11, bringing an end to several weeks of community track racing at Rice University.
The most distinctive race of the weekend was the Big Rivers Splash & Dash, which featured a swim around the Big Rivers Waterpark lazy river before competitors headed out for a 5K run in the Aquathon division.
In the Aquathon, which consisted of ride around the lazy river followed by a 5k, Colin Baker claimed the men’s title in 31:17, narrowly holding off Sam Cocchia (31:46), while Demitrius Frausto finished third in 36:28. On the women’s side, Yvonne Hall took top honors in 33:51, just eight seconds ahead of L. Bray (33:59). Alissa Turek rounded out the podium in 35:33.
The event also featured standalone 10K and 5K races. David Bugenske led the men’s 10K field in 45:11, followed by Isaac Rios (47:42) and Joao Rebelo Manuel (48:20). Jaida Alvarez captured the women’s 10K title in 54:10 ahead of Stephanie Loya (58:44) and Brandy Mason (1:00:00).
In the 5K, Evin Williams won the men’s race in 18:46, with Colton Howard and Tony Almeida close behind. Maria Almeida led the women’s field in 20:32, followed by Rachel Plympton and Braelynn Weller.
Meanwhile, runners gathered in Conroe for the 2026 Outrun Hunger. Jonathan Rotzien paced the men’s 8K field in 28:48, while Mirian Ramirez won the women’s race in 34:20. Bryson Meredith took the men’s 5K title in 17:24, and Maureen Meredith led the women’s race in 21:33.
