In a city with more than 100 run clubs, few embody the creativity and community spirit of Freaks Come Out at Night. What began as a small group of friends looking for a way to stay active during the pandemic has evolved into one of Houston’s most recognizable running crews.
“We started in the summer of 2020 as a few friends keeping fit during COVID shutdowns,” one group member shared. “A new location each week sounded fun, and the club grew through word of mouth and a feature from Strava in 2021.”

The name itself, Freaks Come Out at Night, has an origin story as memorable as the club. “By surprise, the OG group ran into each other at Memorial Park during a late-night run before Freaks was official,” one of the founding members recalled. “When asked what everyone was doing out so late, one of our members said, ‘You know the freaks come out at night!’” The phrase stuck, and soon, so did the community.
What makes Freaks stand out among Houston’s many running groups is its constant motion, literally. “Different locations every week, discovering new routes and groups of people ready to welcome you,” they said. “We’re about showing up and celebrating each other, together.”
The club attracts all types of runners, from casual Friday-night joggers to competitive marathoners. “A complete mix of people looking to be active on a Friday night and enjoy camaraderie. Some want a couple of miles with a group, and some a shakeout before Saturday long runs.”
If you’re wondering what the vibe is like, picture this: “Think all your cousins going to a bar after Thanksgiving dinner, it’s a mix of personalities, everyone relaxed, laughing, and happy to see each other. You and your cousins head out for a few miles before some beers. That’s a Freaks Friday.”

The Freaks are also known for their creative events and traditions. Their signature race, The Exchange, is a 120-mile overnight relay circling Houston, a mix of endurance, exploration, and team spirit. “We also have numerous teams for the Zilker Relays and Texas Independence Relay,” one member said. “In the fall, Follow Me, I’m Lost Too Long Runs begin at new locations each week from various corners of the city. Our anniversary in May and Freaksgiving in November are always fun too.”
When asked what they love most about Houston’s running scene, the answer came easily: “The ability to grow in this sport through the help of others. We help each other reach our goals and cheer really, REALLY loud for one another.”
This fall, the Freaks’ long runs are officially underway. Sundays at 7 a.m. from different locations each week, routes and details are shared on Strava and in Heylo.
