Houston’s spring race calendar isn’t just about PRs and podiums. For many runners, it’s about purpose. This March, three local charity races are turning miles into meaningful impact.
Poppy’s Run for Life
- Sunday, March 8
- Hennessy Park
- 10k, 5k, 1k, Athletes with Disabilities registration available also

For Caryn Honig, race director of Poppy’s Run for Life, this race is deeply personal. A lifelong runner who completed her first marathon in 1985, Honig has experienced profound loss. Her grandfather died by suicide in 1982, “Nobody talked about it,” she said. In March 2022, her father also died by suicide. Around the same time, her daughter was struggling, and after losing her mother tragically, Honig said, “I lost my way. I couldn’t find joy anymore. I needed to find a purpose.”
That purpose became Poppy’s Run for Life, launched in March 2023 to raise awareness for suicide prevention and remind people they are not alone. “The running community has been amazing,” Honig said. “My Houston running friends really rallied around it.”

The race has grown more organized each year, with committees and a fundraising auction supporting its mission. But the heart of the event is changing the conversation around suicide. Participants are invited to call out the names of loved ones they’ve lost, helping reduce stigma and shame. “If you’re struggling, we want to eliminate that shame,” Honig said.
New this year is a Kindness Award, honoring individuals who embody compassion, a reflection of the race’s core message: be kind. For Honig, the goal is simple but powerful: bring people together, keep memories alive, and spread hope far beyond race day.
Silver Heart Care 6th Annual Charity Run
- Sunday, March 22
- Sugar Land
- 10k, 5k

The 6th Annual Silver Heart Care Charity Run supports Silver Heart Care, a Houston-based nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of life for low-income seniors. Through programs that provide groceries, transportation, home repairs, and meaningful companionship, Silver Heart Care serves elderly residents who might otherwise be isolated or underserved.
The charity run has become a key fundraising event for the organization, bringing together families, corporate teams, and community members for a morning centered on movement and service. Participants can choose from multiple distance options, making the event accessible for seasoned runners and casual walkers alike.
Funds raised help ensure seniors have consistent access to food, safe housing, and social connection. At its core, the race is about dignity — ensuring that Houston’s elderly population is not forgotten.
Run for the Rose
- Sunday, April 12
- Helix Park (Medical Center)
- 5k, Family 1k, Survivor Stroll
Run for the Rose benefits Dr. Marnie Rose Foundation, which funds brain cancer research and supports patients and families navigating diagnoses. Founded in memory of Dr. Marnie Rose, the organization has raised millions of dollars to advance research and provide resources to those affected by brain tumors.

The annual race is both a celebration and a tribute. Many participants run in honor or memory of loved ones, wearing team shirts and carrying signs that tell deeply personal stories. The event features multiple race distances, a survivor ceremony, and a festive post-race atmosphere that balances hope with remembrance.
Funds from Run for the Rose directly support brain cancer research grants and patient assistance programs. For many families, it’s a space to grieve, connect, and advocate for better treatment options.
Together, these three races show the power of Houston’s running community. Whether it’s breaking the silence around suicide, serving vulnerable seniors, or funding life-saving cancer research, each mile carries meaning.
