As the heat begins to ease and fall tiptoes into Houston, local runners know it’s time to lace up for one of the most anticipated traditions on the city’s running calendar: the Houston Area Road Race Fall Series.

The series is supported by the Houston Area Road Runners Association (HARRA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the local running community through advocacy, race support, and club coordination. Together with local race organizers, HARRA helps make the Fall Series a showcase of competition and community spirit.
What is the Fall Series?
The Houston Area Road Race Fall Series runs from September through January, bringing together a collection of six standout local races. Each event offers its own unique experience, but runners who participate in multiple races unlock extra rewards, recognition, and the chance to compete for different titles.

“The Fall Series was the brainchild of a leader in our organization back in the mid-1980s,” says Chadwick Holmes, president of HARRA. “At the time, clubs were hosting long-distance events throughout the year, but they hadn’t been coordinated with each other. With the creation of the Fall Series, the races became training milestones for the Houston Marathon in January.”
In addition to boosting participation and engagement within the running community, the series also contributes to local causes. “The Fall and Spring Series also support our charitable aspirations, as most of the individual events are organized by 501(c)(3) running clubs and donate a large portion of their proceeds to charitable organizations and causes,” Holmes adds.
The Runner of the Season
Runners who participate in multiple Fall Series races are eligible for the Runner of the Season title, an honor awarded not just to the fastest athletes, but to those who show consistent participation. Awards are typically given across multiple age groups, and all qualified participants receive a commemorative item to celebrate their achievement.
“We provide cash awards to the top runners in different divisions and know of some of our member clubs who also use the results to track and reward their own runners,” says Holmes.
For those who go the distance and complete every race in the series, there’s an additional honor: the IronFoot Award. “The IronFoot award celebrates those who run all of our series races regardless of time,” Holmes explains.
What to Look Forward to This Fall

This fall promises to be one of the most exciting seasons yet, with returning favorites and a few fresh updates across the series. There’s also been a surge in friendly competition among Houston’s growing network of run clubs. “The introduction of many new run clubs since 2020 has upended expectations of who might come out on top in any given race,” says Holmes. “For example, we’ve seen some incredible performances from clubs like Freaks Come Out at Night, Space City Elite, and Good Guys Running Club at the Fall and Spring relay races!”
Why You Should Sign Up
Whether you’re chasing a personal best, trying your first race, or just want to enjoy the energy of Houston’s running scene, there’s something in the series for everyone. And you don’t have to be part of a run club to participate. “The races connect you to a deep and rich history of Houston running,” explains Holmes. “Signing up is a great way to set goals, stay active through the cooler months, and become part of a welcoming, citywide running community.”
