Houston somehow managed to host everything this weekend. Between the NCAA Tournament, the Houston Open, Ironman 70.3 Galveston, HYROX Houston, and of course the Texas Independence Relay, it felt like the city turned into one giant competition zone. But for the running community, the focus seemed to mainly be on the roads between Gonzales and Houston, where the Texas Independence Relays once again delivered one of the most exciting and competitive weekends of the year.
The headline story: Good Guys Run Club dominated. GGRC swept the competition, taking first in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Their men’s squad (GGRC 1) took the win (again) in 17:27:27, holding off CHECKMATE (17:34:54) and Eastbound & Down Cowboys (18:00:27). On the women’s side, GGRC 4 – pink secured first in 20:34:59, ahead of Eastbound & Down Cowgirls (23:10:21) and Invicta Striders (23:24:02). In the mixed division, Jonkler Cart claimed victory in 20:14:04, followed by Timeless Runners Red (22:31:28) and Wheezing Tomatoes (23:24:05).
Closer to home, the Houston Airports Aviator Run held a fun race where runners got to run along an airport runway. Jarvis Carter (39:57) and Melissa Loy (40:34) took top honors in the 10K, while Gabriel Bunn (16:26) and Rachel Plympton (21:23) led the 5K fields. At Run the Grove 5K, Graham Lively (15:42) and Ariel Kumpar (20:53) grabbed wins, while Lake Houston Bridgefest crowned Noah Perry (17:47) and Casey Timme (20:24) as its 5K champions.
A packed weekend, big performances, and a relay sweep that won’t be forgotten anytime soon. To find your next race, visit our Houston Runner Race Calendar.
