Houston Runner’s packed in a full weekend of competition, from relay racing on grass to battling the Kemah Bridge and celebrating community causes. Here is your race recap for September 13-14.
Road Kill XC Relay
Trail Racing Over Texas brought more than 30 teams to Bear Creek Pioneers Park for the Road Kill XC Relay. The four-person, two-mile relay was competitive from the start, but 40z to Freedom pulled away late to win by nearly a full minute. The Fass Run Club Gold squad followed close behind in second.
Toughest 10K Kemah
The Toughest 10K Kemah, part of the Texas Bridge Series, lived up to its name with challenging climbs over the Kemah Bridge.
- Jonathan Robbins of League City broke the tape in 34:39.
- Pete Brawn of Houston followed in 36:27.
- Lauren Stroud of League City rounded out the podium in 37:17.
Donate Life 2nd Chance Run & Run for a New Day 5K
Two community-focused races gave Houston runners the chance to run for something bigger than themselves. At MacGregor Park, the Donate Life 2nd Chance Run honored organ, eye, and tissue donors with both a 5K and 1-mile option. Meanwhile, the Run for a New Day 5K benefited the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and mental health awareness, bringing out participants for a spirited morning race that emphasized support, remembrance, and community connection.
Summer Meltdown Half Marathon
On September 14, 2025, Sugar Land hosted the Summer Meltdown, featuring a half marathon, 10K, and 5K. Runners faced heat and humidity over the 13.1-mile course, but strong performances stood out: Jose Ignacio Garcia de Albizu Ruiz of Spring won in 1:28, David Wicoff of Houston placed second in 1:45, and Finn Zentgraf of Austin finished third in 1:47.
Texas A&M High School Invitational
The Texas A&M High School Invitational drew hundreds of athletes, with Houston-area talent making a strong showing. Bridgeland in particular dominated the meet, placing multiple athletes in the top ten across both boys’ and girls’ races. Out of more than 280 competitors in the varsity boys’ race, eight Houston runners cracked the top ten:
Boys – Varsity 5K
- Griffen Saacke (Bridgeland) – 1st
- Ryder Darcey (Katy) – 7th
- Dean Rosales (Bridgeland) – 10th
On the girls’ side, Bridgeland athletes again made their mark, joined by other Houston-area runners:
Girls – Varsity 5K
- Laney Barnes (Cy-Woods) – 1st
- Hope Smith (Bridgeland) – 4th
- Susana Rawls (Bridgeland) – 9th
- Taylor Synnott (St. John’s) – 10th
