Houston Race Weekend Recap (February 7–8): Mardi Gras Miles, Fast 5Ks, and Ultras

Races across Texas filled the February 7–8 weekend, offering everything from community-driven 5Ks to high-level ultra-distance competition. With coolish winter weather in their favor, runners turned in quick performances, celebrated Mardi Gras, and took on one of the most well-known ultras in the sport.

Running with a Heart 5K & Friendship 5K

Community-focused races anchored the weekend with strong performances at both the Running with a Heart 5K and the Friendship 5K. In the Running with a Heart 5K, Zade Ames led the men’s field, taking the win in 19:00, followed closely by William Smith (20:03) and Michael Tse (20:05). On the women’s side, Bethay Leavens claimed first in 19:42, with Diana Mazariegos (22:29) and Mitzi Laughlin (24:15) rounding out the podium.

At the Friendship 5K, Stefano Ratto Schol earned the men’s victory in 20:02, while Brad Staller (21:37) and Sean Pappolla (21:35) followed. The women’s race saw A. Staller take first in 22:28, ahead of Christy Lan (24:29) and Elana Loftspring (28:18).

Mardi Gras Madness Brings the Party and the Pace

The festive Mardi Gras Madness races featured competitive fields in both the 10K and 5K. In the men’s 10K, Philip Davis won in 40:20, followed by Caleb Moore (41:10) and Jarvis Carter (42:29). Heidi Rasmussen dominated the women’s 10K, crossing the line in 29:39.

The men’s 5K title went to Josh Rayner in 19:00, while Melissa Bittick led the women’s field in 20:01, with tight racing throughout both podiums.

Rocky Raccoon 100: Ultra Endurance on Display

At Huntsville State Park, the legendary Rocky Raccoon 100 delivered standout ultra performances. Nick Petterson captured the men’s 100-mile win in 14:38:37, while Tatiana Rypinski claimed the women’s title in 17:59:16. In the 100K, Philip Sebastiani and Megan Hoogland secured victories in 9:17:00 and 11:02:10, respectively.

Katy Half Marathon Closes the Weekend Strong

The Katy Half Marathon capped off the weekend with speed across distances. Luke Keogh won the men’s half in 1:13:52, while Lauren Pearce led the women in 1:31:46. The 5K races also impressed, highlighted by Jayson Macintyre’s 15:38 finish and Alyssa Jochen’s 19:29 victory.
