Houston Running July 11-12 Weekend Recap: Popsicle Dash Keeps Summer Racing Series Rolling

This recap is powered by BKV Energy.

After an action-packed Fourth of July weekend that featured races across the Houston area, this weekend was a chance to slow down without stepping away from competition. With just one event on the calendar, the Popsicle Dash gave runners an opportunity to race, recover, and continue building fitness through the summer heat.

Houston’s summer conditions once again tested runners, but several athletes turned in impressive performances.

In the men’s 10K, Richard Powell claimed the victory in 41:19, finishing comfortably ahead of Sammy Flores (42:56) and Michael Sparks (44:49).

The women’s 10K featured one of the closest finishes of the morning. Brianna Trevizo crossed the line first in 41:51, holding off Carley Flanders, who finished just 24 seconds behind in 42:15. Denise Baker rounded out the podium with a time of 46:57.

The men’s 5K produced the tightest race of the day. David Guia earned the win in 16:45, narrowly edging Logan Foederer, who finished just four seconds later in 16:49. Addison Gault took third in 17:28.

On the women’s side, Melissa Bittick ran an outstanding 20:18 to capture first place while Naureen Malik completed the podium in 20:59.

Compared to last weekend’s packed Fourth of July race schedule, this weekend felt almost quiet. But for many Houston runners, that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. A lighter race calendar gave athletes a chance to recover from holiday racing, log quality training miles, or jump into the Popsicle Dash as part of their summer training.

The break won’t last long. The Houston race calendar fills back up next weekend with multiple events.
