October is one of the busiest months of the year for Houston runners. The race calendar is packed with half marathons, 5Ks, 10Ks, trail races and plenty of Halloween-themed events. With cooler mornings finally starting to make an appearance, there are plenty of reasons to get out and race this month.
The biggest race on the October calendar is the UTHealth Houston Half Marathon & 10K, taking place October 25 Downtown. The half marathon is one of the major stops in the HARRA Fall Series, which also includes the Space City 10 Miler & 5K on October 11. The two races give runners a chance to tackle 10 miles and 13.1 miles as the HARRA series builds toward the Chevron Houston Marathon in January.
The Sugar Land Half Marathon is another major October race, offering a half marathon, 10K and mile. For runners looking for a fun race-day experience, the Shipley Do-Nut Dash brings together running and one of Houston’s favorite treats.
Down the coast, the Toughest 10K Galveston gives runners a chance to race by the beach, while the Chord Energy Corporate 5K celebrates its 10th year. The milestone makes this year’s event a particularly notable one for Houston’s corporate running community.
October also brings a new event to the Texas trail calendar. Trail Racing Over Texas is launching the Galveston Ultra Trail on October 17, with distances ranging from a 1-mile race to a marquee point-to-point 50K along the Galveston shoreline, plus a relay, kids run and other activities.
This month also brings a range of charity races. If you seek to race for something bigger than yourself, these events fit.
And then there are the Halloween races. From costumes to spooky themes, October has plenty of opportunities to make your race calendar a little more fun.
