Fall Running in Houston: Fake It Till You Feel Cool (Literally)

Fall Running in Houston: Fake It Till You Feel Cool (Literally)

The calendar says it’s the first day of fall. Meanwhile, you step outside for your “crisp fall morning run” and immediately feel like you’ve opened an oven door into a sauna. Welcome to Houston, where fall is just a rumor.

But don’t worry, runners here have mastered the art of self-deception. If the thermometer refuses to cooperate, here are some truly ridiculous ways to trick yourself into thinking it’s fall running season in Houston.

Dress Like It’s 50 Degrees Anyway
Nothing screams “seasonal denial” like lacing up in leggings and a long-sleeve. Sure, you’ll last maybe three minutes before questioning every decision you’ve ever made, but hey, you’ll look like those running influencers in Vermont!

Trade Sweat for “Crisp Autumn Glow”
That drenched singlet? Not sweat! It’s just your fall dew look. Pretend every bead rolling down your forehead is the poetic mist of a frosty October dawn.

Run Through Piles of… Anything
Other cities get crunchy leaves to kick through on morning runs. We get oak pollen, discarded receipts, and the occasional dead palm leaves. Kick ‘em anyway! Squint hard enough and you’ll swear you’re on a tree-lined trail in New England. Bonus points if you Instagram it with the caption: “Fall miles are the best miles.”

BYOP (Bring Your Own Pumpkin)
No leaves on the ground? No problem. Carry a mini pumpkin during your run. Toss it from hand to hand like a baton. People will assume you’re training for some kind of seasonal strongman competition. Plus, it’s excellent upper-body cross-training.

Replace Water Stops with Apple Cider Stands
Why bother with boring old water when you could be sipping apple cider mid-run? Sure, people will stare as you slow to a walk to chug from a thermos of pumpkin-spiced liquid, but that’s just part of the fall aesthetic. Bonus points if you insist it’s hydration science, because nothing says “serious runner” like cinnamon-flavored sugar water while you’re sweating through 90-degree Houston humidity.

Fall running in Houston isn’t about the temperature, it’s about attitude. The air may still feel like soup, but with enough pumpkins and denial, you can convince yourself it’s “perfect fall weather.” Of course, all of this is pure sarcasm. Houston heat and humidity are no joke, so be smart out there. Hydrate, slow your pace when needed, and listen to your body.
