Campus Sprints to Global Stages: September 20 – 21 Race Recap

It was a full weekend on the racing calendar for Houston-area runners, both locally and abroad. From international competition in Berlin to community-focused 5Ks closer to home, athletes of all levels laced up to take part. This is your Houston Runner weekend race recap for September 20 – 21.

According to the Houston Area Road Runners Association (HARRA), over 180 Houstonians joined the field of more than 55,000 participants at the Berlin Marathon. Conditions were hotter than usual for late September, which added a challenge to the flat, record-potential course. Elite runners still delivered fast times and podium finishes under those less-than-ideal temperatures.

Closer to home, the Run Houston! University of Houston brought competitors to campus for 5K and 10K races. Kevin Matthews (36:14) edged Angel Torres (36:15) at the line to claim the men’s 10k title, with Andres Daza (37:21) finishing third. On the women’s side, Angemily Garces (37:56) led the field, followed by Ana Karina Infante (38:38) and Nicole Wheeler (38:45).

The Night Moves Trail Run took place at Stephen F. Austin State Park, offering runners 5K, 10K, 15K, and 20K distances on technical trails under the stars. Meanwhile, the Night Nation Run mixed a 5K course with a festival-style atmosphere, blending music, lights, and fitness. The University Run at Rice added another collegiate backdrop, bringing runners through the shaded paths of the Rice campus.

Charity also played a central role. The Woodforest Charity Run, 5K Run for Restoration, Run 4 Orphan Rescue, and Run for Hope all brought out participants motivated to support local and global causes, emphasizing the community’s commitment to giving back through running.

From international marathons to neighborhood 5Ks, the weekend highlighted both the range and the strength of Houston’s running community.
