Houston Runner Summer Bingo: How Many Boxes Can You Check Off?

If you’ve trained through a Houston summer before, you already know: survival is the real workout. That’s why Houston Runner created the ultimate Summer Bingo Card. A collection of painfully relatable moments that every local runner experiences between May and September.

No matter your pace or goals, Houston runners tend to experience the same challenges during the summer months, and this bingo card captures those moments.

Some squares are guaranteed. Ran before 5:00 AM might be the most common one of all, because once the sun comes up, the heat turns an easy run into a battle. Then there’s Dew point over 75 degrees, which feels like a daily occurrence come June. If you’ve ever stepped outside at 4:45 AM and immediately started sweating, you understand.

Other boxes capture the unique nature of running in Houston. Got caught in a random thunderstorm feels inevitable, while Started a run with dry shoes, ended with soaked shoes is just part of life even if you don’t run through water. With sinking sidewalks and streets all over the city, every Houston runner has probably encountered Puddle covered the entire sidewalk moment and had to decide whether to leap over it or just embrace wet feet.

The card also highlights the people that make Houston’s running community so entertaining. Maybe you’ve Heard someone say “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity,” or spotted 5+ runners wearing hydration vests before sunrise at Memorial Park. And of course, there’s always the legend doing mile repeats in noon heat, making everyone else question their sanity.

Throw in a possum sighting before sunrise, a few treadmill miles because of weather, and the occasional ignored runner wave, and you’ve officially completed the Houston summer running experience.
