Another summer weekend brought local runners to the starting line, with two races giving participants a chance to run before the busy Fourth of July race schedule arrives. From fast 5Ks to a competitive 8K, runners took advantage of another opportunity to race despite the rising temperatures.

The Independence Day 8K featured close finishes across multiple divisions. In the men’s 8K, Sean Flanders claimed the overall victory in 32:16, holding off Enrique Guerrero, who finished just 29 seconds back in 32:45. Joel Camancho rounded out the podium with a time of 33:15. The women’s race was even tighter, as Nicole Wheeler crossed the line first in 32:18, followed by Brianna Trevizo in 33:02 and Elizabeth Warren in 33:39.

The 5K also produced strong performances. Jason Skinner led the men’s field in 17:55, edging Landen Cline by just four seconds. Dewayne Gill completed the top three in 18:17. On the women’s side, Tori Contreras earned the win with a time of 21:36. Erin Morris finished second in 22:07, while Chloe Smith took third in 23:07.

At the Smoke Eater 5K, Bethany Leavens delivered one of the fastest performances of the weekend, winning the women’s race in 19:59 and breaking the 20-minute barrier. Jannie Cardenas followed closely in 20:06, with Jessica Cardenas just three seconds behind in 20:09 to complete a tight podium. Adam Trevino captured the men’s title in 19:56, while Alex Acosta (21:36) and Ivan Rosa (21:43) finished second and third.

The calendar shifts into one of the biggest racing weekends of the summer next week, with Fourth of July events taking place all across the Houston area. Whether you’re chasing a personal best, racing in red, white, and blue, or simply starting your holiday with a few miles, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate Independence Day on the run.
