While much of Houston spent Independence Day around the grill with hot dogs in one hand and a cold beer in the other, Houston runners were collecting finisher medals before most backyard barbeques even started. Despite a Heat Advisory, thousands of runners still lined up across the city for one of the busiest race weekends of the summer.
At the Firecracker 4 in Lake Jackson, Wesley Maxwell claimed the men’s four-mile title in 21:33, narrowly edging Andres Padron (21:43), while Lauren Stroud continued to dominate leading the women’s race with an impressive 23:20.
Over in Vintage Park, Houston Fourth Fest offered three race distances. Anthony Milton captured the challenging 17.76K in 58:56, with Taylor Lee winning the women’s race in 1:15. Simon Sada crossed first in the men’s 9K, while the women’s race was won by an anonymous participant. The fast 5K produced one of the closest finishes of the weekend as Landon Deas held off Liam Zimmerman by just one second, 17:00 to 17:01. Crista Gonzalez led the women’s 5K in 19:29.
The appropriately named Texas Bud Heat Wave lived up to its reputation as runners battled the summer conditions. Aiden Faz won the men’s five-mile race in 27:16, while Sophia Strange took the women’s title in 30:10. Luis Murillo and Yumileydis Mestre earned victories in the 5K.
The Kingwood 4th of July Freedom Run also drew strong participation, with Noah Perry winning the men’s eight-mile race in 53:14 and Casey Timme topping the women’s field in 57:11. Scott Loghry and Aida Campa claimed victories in the four-mile races.
In Baytown, the America Mile Challenge offered an even hotter spin on Independence Day racing. Jonathan Robbins completed an incredible 21 laps to win the men’s Liberty Division, while Acmae El Yacoubi matched Sung In Kim-Vences with 16 laps to win the women’s Liberty Division. Jeremy McLaughlin and Stephanie Gonzales topped the Freedom Division.
The holiday weekend wasn’t finished after Friday. Runners were back at it on Saturday for the Treat Trot and the Run Wild 5K & Kids Run, proving that even soaring temperatures couldn’t slow down Houston’s running community. If this weekend was any indication, July is shaping up to be one of the busiest months of the year for Houston-area races.
