September marks the unofficial start of fall racing season in Houston, and while the temperatures may not quite feel like fall yet, the local race calendar is getting crowded. Whatever you’re looking for, September has a variety of races to offer.
Labor Day Weekend Starts September Strong
The month kicks off with the Beneeezy Purple Monkey Fun Run in Alvin on September 5. Now in its 21st year, the longtime community favorite offers a 1K kids run, 5K and 10K, making it a great option for runners and families looking to start September with a race.
On Labor Day, September 7, runners can head to Katy for the Keller Williams Premier Katy Labor Day 5K. The event offers a certified, chip-timed 5K and Kids K, making it an easy way to get a few miles in before the holiday weekend comes to an end.
There are a few other Labor Day races that are also open for registration!
September’s Races to Watch
The Toughest 10K Kemah returns September 13, giving runners the chance to tackle one of the Houston area’s most recognizable bridges. If you prefer your miles off the pavement, the Night Moves Trail Run takes place September 12-13 at Stephen F. Austin State Park, with multiple distances and nighttime trail racing.
The Sugar Land Cowboys 5K is another September race worth adding to your calendar, especially for runners looking for a fun local 5K as fall racing gets underway.
Remembering September 11
September also brings two races that give runners an opportunity to honor the lives lost and the heroes who responded on September 11, 2001.
The 9/11 Heroes Run takes place September 12 at Houston City Hall. The 5K welcomes runners, walkers and ruckers and commemorates the 25th anniversary of 9/11 while honoring first responders, service members and their families.
The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk also returns to the Houston area, with the Cypress event supporting the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and its work benefiting fallen and catastrophically injured first responders, military heroes and their families.
Grab Your Team for Road Kill XC
The newish and popular Road Kill XC, a cross-country relay at Bear Creek Park. The event gives runners a chance to compete as part of a team rather than simply chasing an individual finish time. If you’ve been looking for a fun way to get your running crew together, this one belongs on the calendar. It’s also part of the HARRA fall series, so start getting your points now!
Plenty of Charity Races, Too
Beyond these featured events, September is packed with charity races supporting causes throughout the Houston area. From childhood cancer awareness to education, veterans and other local organizations, there are plenty of opportunities to put your miles toward something bigger.
