Houston is gearing up for a running experience like no other. On January 24 the inaugural Houston Roast Run & Comedy Show will take over Buffalo Bayou Park, blending the sweat of a 5K(ish) run with the spirited humor of a live comedy performance, truly the first event of its kind in the city.
The idea for the Roast Run wasn’t born out of a typical race director’s checklist, it came from a moment of creative camaraderie between Tony Knapp, the race’s director, and local Houston comedian Rich Williams. Knapp explains that Rich, who has been an announcer for other running events for six or seven years, had long talked about collaborating on something special. “We were sitting around kicking around ideas,” Knapp recalls. “What if we did something like a roast run?” And just like that, humor and running collided to create an event that promises not just medals but unforgettable laughter.
The Roast Run is a 5K(ish) race on the scenic Buffalo Bayou Trails, but this isn’t your standard run. Professional, local comedians are stationed along the course at specially designated “roast stations,” mic in hand, ready to rib participants on everything from their pace to their fashion choices. It’s all in good fun, Knapp says, and has been designed to enhance the experience rather than intimidate runners.
“We wanted to go beyond running,” Knapp explains. “It’s about creating an experience where people come for the run but stay for the vibes.” Whether you sprint, jog, or walk, you’ll hear playful jabs meant to entertain, and maybe, just maybe, spur you on when your legs start to complain.
After runners cross the finish line and collect their finisher’s medal, the party continues. The post-race Comedy Show, open to runners and non-runners alike, features Houston-based comedians hand-picked by Rich Williams, including Blame the Comic, Corlis DeLauren, and Mario Salazar. Each performer delivers a 30-minute set, with Rich as the host, making it the perfect date night event after a day of activity. Comedy-only tickets are available for those who’d prefer to skip the 5K and enjoy the laughs.
Knapp describes a runner reaction that’s been overwhelmingly positive. Most participants laugh off the jabs and embrace the shared spirit of fun and community. “This is about fun, connection, and something completely new.” The atmosphere is inclusive, with a focus on positivity and entertainment rather than elite racing.
Looking ahead, Knapp sees the Roast Run as a format with potential to expand, maybe even to other cities or with additional twists on the concept. But for now, Houston will be the first to host this laugh-filled run, transforming a 5K into an event where endurance and comedy go hand in hand.
